Francis Drake (1540-1596) Plymouth/England
Explorer, naval officer and privateer, known as the first English circumnavigator.
WHO ALSO participated in early English slave-trading expeditions with his cousin John Hawkins. During raids along the West African coast they captured Africans or seized enslaved people from Portuguese ships and transported them to the Spanish Caribbean to be sold into plantation slavery.
Between 1552 and 1567 their voyages to Guinea and Sierra Leone enslaved an estimated 1,200–1,400 Africans. Contemporary accounts from slave traders suggest that several times that number died in the process.
