INTRODUCTION // Extensions
In 2001, Burkhard Schittny created the seven piece video performance “Extensions”, a work that memorably illustrates human psychological states - desperation, powerlessness, uncertainty, anonymity, solitude and disaffection. The artist recorded himself in seven videos between 2.38 and 5.04 minutes, trying to move his body trough a room. A body, that is only functioning to a limited extend, since Schittny attached prostheses on his appendages in various ways. The videos are full of power – much like the power, that the performance artist must put into his movements. Schittnys “Extensions” are prostheses missing their purpose, not helping, but obstructing. Especially with relation to the minimalism of its means, such a picture is a strong allegory: for everlasting failure, for an emblematic jolting and limping – without Conclusio.
